How the ROI is calculated

This model estimates savings from two drivers: reduced absenteeism and reduced turnover. It multiplies your current costs by the improvement you expect and compares that to your annual program cost.

Key equations:

  • Absence cost now = headcount × salary × loaded multiplier × absenteeism rate

  • Absence savings = absence cost now × absenteeism reduction × participation

  • Turnover savings = headcount × turnover rate × turnover reduction × salary × replacement cost percent

  • Total savings = absence savings + turnover savings

  • Net benefit = total savings − program cost

  • ROI = net benefit ÷ program cost

Estimates are directional. Use your own benchmarks where available.

What a “good” ROI looks like

A positive ROI with a payback period under 12 months is often considered strong for HR initiatives. Many teams also value non-financial wins like engagement, morale, and employer brand. If you want a tailored model that reflects your org structure and locations, we will build it for you.

Frequently asked questions

What inputs do I need?

Headcount, average salary, current absenteeism and turnover, expected reductions, and an annual program budget.

How should I pick the reduction percentages?

Use conservative assumptions for planning. You can test conservative, expected, and aggressive scenarios in the sensitivity table.

Does participation change the result?

Yes. Absenteeism improvements are applied to the participating group by default. You can also choose to apply participation to turnover savings.

What is replacement cost as a percent of salary?

This captures recruiting, training, and lost productivity for a new hire. Many teams use 30% to 100% for knowledge roles. Use your own data if available.
